I'm going to move my blog over to my website at www.bethanyquilt.com. It looks pretty awful right now because I'm still in the midst of trying to figure it all out, but with a little time and guidance from my son who is home for the summer, I'm hoping it's going to work!

Accuquilt (the new toy)

I'm putting together a quilt using the tumbler die cutter - I cut the pieces for this quilt in about 30 minutes!!! All with the corners blunted at the precise angle so they go together perfectly!!! This is very cool. I'm using a new line of fabric that just came into the shop and having a blast. Photos soon....

Fun Day

This is the pin cushion part! It also has a thread catcher that hangs over the side of your table. Going to the shop so you can see it there.
I also made my first buttonhole on my 820!!! Way Cool!! I used the automatic sizer thing - where you hold the button up to the screen and move the line until it fits and then bingo!!!! The machine just makes the perfect size. So easy!!! It went on a cell phone carrier that will also be at the shop very soon.

Sewing Away

Yesterday I finished the binding on this one. I think I'm going to watch a movie tonight and hand stitch it down.

Then I made these 2 belts!!! It was Anne Marie Mot's idea and it's a lot of fun!!!!! Can't wait to use them.

Check out the Bronx basil!! Growing like crazy so I cut it back and made pesto. Yummy.....

And today I pieced a xmas sample. The photo is awful - it's from my phone and I couldn't get the red and green right in iphoto but you get the idea. Great fabrics!!! Just need to quilt it.

New Toy

Quilt Market was fantastic!!! So many new ideas and lots of beautiful fabric. I bought a new toy - I'll show it when it's delivered. Very exciting!!!!
I've finished quilting the big quilt for the next class session at HQ. Tomorrow it will get the binding and then off to the shop. The new schedule comes out June , so I'm just in time!!!

My Eldon now has a label and sleeve so it's ready for the Northern Star show on May 1 & 2.......

the rows are almost done on this quilt and I'm loving it.....

and while I was putting the rows together I used the scraps from this drawer as leaders and enders......

to make these crazy quilt squares that will go into a donation quilt sometime!

I learned a very cool technique putting mitered borders on a table cloth. Forgot to take a photo - but it will show up soon at HQ.

This is a really neat Amy Butler pattern with some of our new fabrics. I think a class for the summer....

And here is the next bag pattern I want to try. Too much FUN!!

A Working Weekend!

I just have to add the borders to the County Line pattern for the summer class. I love the fabrics - they didn't photograph well so I'll post it when it has the border.
I cut more blocks for the sampler quilt. Each bag has a block in it so I can just sit down and sew. This is the end of the blocks!! Soon I'll figure out a setting.

And this is a new quilt started with stacked fabric. I love this fabric and it's a lot of fun to see the blocks come together.

My new favorite tool - it's not still in the package because I am using it for......

this! Small sample blocks with lots of little pieces and a lot of finger pressing - or should I say favorite new pressing tool? My finger was getting tired.

And this was a finished! It's A Wrap with the scraps from the Eldon Star quilt and other fabrics I wanted to use up. I love it and am getting ready to make another.

My Eldon is getting the binding sewn down. FINALLY finished quilting. Now to think up a name so I can submit it to Northern Star. I hate picking names.

A New Favorite

This is my new favorite applique stitch that I found on my 820! I didn't want to do invisible thread (thought it was kind of dull) and this one is easy to do and adds a little texture.

Wow! It's been awhile. I'll post photos of the quilt I'm working on really soon. I chose the colors/fabrics remembering the drive up to VT for Thanksgiving - noticing all the colors along the highway - and I'm hoping they all sing together in this quilt. We'll see.....

Blind Hem Stitch

How many of you have this stitch on your machine and have never used it? Until today, I could say that described me. I've had two pair of pants in the closet for about 6 months now waiting to be hemmed and today, I finally decided to look in the manual and find out how to do this! Why did I wait so long?!?!? Just make the hem look like the one in the diagram in your manual, put the #5 foot on with some matching thread, and it's practically done before you start. I was going to hand stitch another hem down during the Yankee game tonight (keep your fingers crossed - yes, I am a fan) but I think I'm going to run up to the studio and do it before the first pitch!!!

Catching Up

I have been sewing, just not posting! Here's what been going on here. This first one is a donation quilt and I think it might just be the weirdest quilt I have ever made. It's bound and ready to go. At least it will keep someone warm!

These are parts that will become a class sample using the new Bali Pops. They are gorgeous!

This is on its way to being a large basket. Another way to use up scraps! Can you see the Hudson River in the background? It is a wonderful view. I'm looking forward to the fall colors on the Palisades.

This is for a very beautiful three-year-old who just was just adopted from Ethiopia by some special relatives. It's bound and washed and ready to send off to her.

And this is a sample for an upcoming class at the Happy Quilter.

Labor Day 2009

First a bike ride in Van Cortland Park. Who would think this is in the middle of the Bronx?!? The photo is a little wobbly - that's Frank up ahead - I took it from my bike!

On the way home we stopped at Wave Hill for lunch......

Did a little sewing in the afternoon.......
And in the evening we had a delicious dinner with friends, followed by the annual fireworks in Closter.

A treat of a day. Now back to the real world!!

A Green Go Green Bag

I finally put together a real bag for the cover photo of the pattern. I had made a few bags while I was messing around with ideas and then wrote the pattern for a version I thought would be best. It was a little different than the ones I had made, so I didn't want to put them on the cover. Marcia was nice enough to try out the pattern so her bag went on the cover for a bit, but then I saw this fabric at the shop and decided that I "needed" a green bag for the cover photo. The patterns will be at the shop next week..

Now I am playing with an "It's a Wrap" fabric basket - or maybe it's a tote bag? All I'm sure about is that it's getting bigger and I'm having sooooo much fun. I had some small strips leftover from Eldon and now they have found a use. Photos coming soon.

Wow! It sure has been awhile! We did go away for a few days but time has been flying by. I've been playing with my 820 in preparation for the demo on 8/20/09 at The Happy Quilter. I decided to see how many of the different features I could use making fabric bowls. It's been a great way to learn more about this machine. Tapering and Tassel stitches included!! This machine has a great stitch, and it's so easy to modify the tension for different threads. I do love making these bowls.

Top is Finished

It's not a very good photo, but the top is pieced. I just quilted and bound the other big one for the fall session, while getting used to the new machine. Did it all in one day! OK, so it wasn't very fancy quilting (and I did all the binding by machine), but I am faster with the bigger space. Next will be a table runner, and then I figure I'll be comfortable enough to tackle this one.

It's Ready to Go

Isn't that a pretty sight?! I'm having a blast on this machine. The Dual Feed function is wonderful. I've been putting the rows together on this quilt, and my other machine was pushing the bulky points off so that it was a real challenge to get them to match. The 820 with the dual feed just breezes over these seams and tonight I finished putting the rows together. Now for borders and quilting.

My son says that the 820 makes my other 150 Bernina looks like a little Easy Bake Oven!

Coming Along

This is just another peak at this quilt. There are/will be 16 stars when it's all done. Hope to finish piecing the top in the next few days. Then I'll be able to quilt it on my new 820! It's all set up in it's cabinet and ready to go...

A Sneak Peek

Not getting a lot of work done around here, but I am enjoying some time off! Here's a peek of what is going on when I can steal some time to sew. The first three stars (only need 13 more) are from a new pattern we found at market that is planned for a fall class and the last photo is of the other fall project that I'm using as Leaders and Enders while I sew the stars. It's all fun!!!

My son has come home from college and we're shuffling around the two apartments for the summer. He is unpacking - you can imagine what the place looks like! I took a look and did what any sane person would do - escape to another place. I'm moving my "piecing" machine (my Bernina 150) into the guest bedroom in the apartment and will put the 820 up in the studio for quilting. This way I won't have to share the space with him so much during the summer and this will work out better for both of us!
I've been working on a few projects in the meantime. The first is a sneak peak at a quilt for the fall class schedule....
and this bag is a real treat!! It's called the Two-Hour Tulip Bag and we found it at market. It can be make in four sizes (this is the smallest) and it really does go together quickly and easily. This is a sample for the shop (we do have the pattern ;-) and I might just have to make a few more just for fun.

I placed my order for the Bernina 820! I've been waiting for this machine, and it's just as amazing as I hoped it would be. I've been playing with it on the quilting frame up at the shop and it is a treat to quilt with it! I should have it by the end of May and I can't wait!!! Meanwhile I play with the one at the shop. Go up and try it on the frame with the BSR if you have a chance. It's a fun time.
I'm off to quilt market for the weekend. There are a few new purses that I have almost finished - a new pattern - and I'm hoping that early next week I can post a photo or two.

Happy Mother's Day

Look what came in the mail yesterday from my son up at MIT. A beautiful treat! Enjoy your Mother's Day. I'm looking forward to getting some time in on my machine - nothing exciting yet but I'm cleaning out the scrap tops and quilting them so I can donate them and get them out of the house. Five are done, and one to go!
Also, we received the Bernina 820 up at the shop and I'm thinking this is the machine for me!! I'll keep you posted.......

Cleaning Up

I've been trying to do a little clean out - inspired as well by Bonnie Hunter's talk at Brownstone Quilters Guild this past week. Someone gave me some unfinished scrap blocks a long time ago and that started this one. Pieced the back.Then I had these blocks laying around so this got borders. Then I pieced the back and the batting, and then quilted it. Yippee!!

No Handles Yet

The moral of this story is - check to see if you have the right color handles BEFORE you make the bag. I'll just have to get out to Connie's and pick up the right color. I have lots of handles waiting for bags - just not the one I need. This is my Gold Handbag pattern. I haven't made it in awhile and I forgot how much I like the shape of it. This is going to match nicely with the jacket I made when it's done.

The jacket is finished (I really like it) and the bags just need their handles. I ran out of clothesline, so then I started playing with the Circular Embroidery attachment along with the #21 foot - couching circles!!! I really do love making circles. I promise to take some photos....

Back to Work

It's been a really long time, but now I'm feeling like I have caught up with life and can get back on a roll. The sample for HQ summer session just needs the binding sewn down, and I am getting caught up on other projects. I finished up another sample of the Tote-A-Round pattern (my favorite blue fabric), the other parts are of more Totes waiting to be put together, and I am going to make this jacket pattern. Theresa at the Happy Quilter helped my pick out fabric very patiently - actually she mostly was patience when I rejected fabric - seems I really love to make quilts full of lots of color but have a REALLY hard time imagining wearing lots of color. I think we found a blend that I'm hoping I'll wear!

Moving Day

They are packing up the truck and we're off to our new apartment - the beginning of the next adventure. Soon I will be able to set up my studio and get back to work. There are many projects percolating in my mind - which to do first.......?

Not Quilting

OK, this post is going to have nothing to do with quilting (because I haven't been doing any) but it's about what I have been doing - cleaning out for the move! I found a great site www.myboneyard.com for recycling old computer equipment and cell phones. It's easy to set up and do, and they pay the shipping costs. All you have to do is pack it up, print out the mailing label they email right away, and drop it off at a UPS place or the US Post Office. They even give a reward if you are recycling something of value - I can't tell you much about this part because mine didn't have any value! Now you can get rid of all that stuff you've been hanging on to because you didn't know what to do with it - or am I the only one in that situation......?
Anyway, it's a really good thing and it's easy to do!

Family Weekend

So we went up to Boston for MIT Family Weekend and had a great time. We listened to some amazing speakers, had a wonderful dinner at our son's fraternity (cooked by the brothers along with the setting off the of fire alarm - just like home!), and got to see my first college football game. Here's the stadium and bleachers,

and here they are running off the field after playing the theme song from the movie, Jaws. It was a kick!

And they won the game, too! The last photo is what I'll be doing this week.....

What I've been doing....

So this is what I've been doing! They are for the next session of classes up at the Happy Quilter. The first is a sampler, with applique, pper piecing, strip piecing, even a mitered corner, so that when you are done, you've learned a lot of skills. The second is an Angle Play quilt (I've been wanting to have fun with this for a long time) and here is just a peek at what I am doing. The top is actually almost complete, and I'll put up a photo soon. I'm also spending time getting to know the new 830 machine that we just got in up at the shop. I'm amazed!!! It's soooooo much fun to play with!

DS decided that a t-shirt quilt should have t-shirt pillow cases to go with it! DH found a bunch that he was willing to part with, so then I started sewing. An XL t-shirt is wide enough, but it's a little short, so I just cut the bottoms of a few old ones and attached them to increase the length and presto!!!! Now he can go off to college.

Glue for Binding?

Yes indeed!! I can't take any credit for this. I learned about it from the free videos posted on Sharon Schamber's site www.sharonschambernetwork.com/free_area/free.html
Look for the demo for Binding the Angel (and there are a lot of other good ones to check out as well). Use this on quilts that you plan to wash (I use Elmer's Washable School Glue). I've never used it on a quilt that I didn't intend to wash, so I don't know what would happen if you left the glue in there!
Here's a brief demo:
Sew your binding on as you usually do. Iron it out from the front, so that it will be easier to fold the binding around to the back without leaving puckers on the front.

Then run a small bead of glue (what you see here is probably too much!) in the seam allowance on the edge of the back of the quilt. I use these smaller caps for the glue. You can find them at a craft store. The metal ones leave a clean, small bead of glue but I find it hard to squeeze the glue out when I use them, so I just deal with it and use the slightly larger plastic tip.

Then iron the binding in place!! The heat of the iron sets the glue quickly and it will hold it long enough for you to hand sew it in place. It's especially handy for fixing the corners neatly - just as you would like them to be!!

And the last little hint - I hate making labels, but I do use the alphabet on my machine to stitch my initials and the year into the binding.

Now I'm off to watch some Olympics and finish this binding!

T-Shirt Quilt

So now it just needs the binding! We decided to try making this without any stabilizer (so it would be softer) and it worked! I did quilt it rather heavily (and there are a few hearts hiding in the quilting), but I think it is going to work. I joined the pieces with my walking foot attached, and this kept the seams from distorting and stretching. There are a lot of good memories in this quilt. I can't wait to bind it and wash it to see how soft it will be.....

Just a quick hint - These are small things to hold your hair in place - or - if you are like me and have hair so short they would never be needed - you use them to keep your bobbins neat (especially the slippery threads and invisible thread).

It's finished! Actually the binding is just glued around to the back ready to finish hand sewing tonight while I watch "Bella". Who knew that Elmer's Washable School Glue was a quilting necessity?!?

Now this other photo is of a crumby thing that was supposed to use up lots of random scraps (although it's hard to make a dent). The sashing choices are kind of lame, but I did figure a few things out and use up some (not enough) things I wanted to get rid of. Now I can piece more rejects to use them up on the back. It will go to Project Linus NJ and Hillary Roberts will figure out what to do with it! She always finds a home for everything!

Here's my favorite photo from our recent trip to Jasper, before we left DH to teach/coach/play at a music festival in Banff. It was a great hike - complete with a thunderstorm that went by as we reached the top (had lunch just below and waited for it to pass). We're on top of the world!

Finished quilting this today. Now I just have to get the binding on (of course I forgot to get that, so it will have to wait until I get up to the shop). It's all lines, mostly curvy. This is one of my favorite ways to quickly quilt and it's easy for beginners as well. I agree with Tonya, there is something about lines. She is hooked on freehand fans. Check out what she does with them!

Next is a photo of another project in progress. I call it "something from nothing" since it's all the little scraps I would have thrown away before I started reading Bonnie's site! I'm working out a fun pattern for all the little bits with some sashings to perk it up. You see that soon.....

Lemonade

Here's today's project, along with the motivational cup of coffee in the lower corner. It's called Lemonade (thanks Gloria for the name) and it's a beginner class for the fall session at the Happy Quilter. It's a bunch of fabric strips joined on the diagonal and the triangle border is made from the leftover scraps from joining the strips - cool! It had better get done this weekend - quilting it all (or mostly all) with the walking foot so it's "beginner" from start to finish.

So...... I'm up and running with my first post! Thought I'd begin to share what's coming up for my fall classes at the Happy Quilter. Here is a shot of The Natural (check out the Hemingworth Thread I used for quilting if you can. I decided it was time to use all my favorite gold fabrics.
When DH gets home (with his computer) from Utah tomorrow, I can post my favorite photo from our recent trip to Jasper, CA. In the mean time here's a photo of a very happy day.
